Moving survey checklist: what to check on a home visit

The survey is where you decide whether the quote will be right. Ten more minutes at the customer's home save hours on moving day. Use this checklist every time, in the same order.

1. Before you arrive

Confirm the appointment, check the address on the map and look at the street: is it narrow, one-way, in a restricted zone? Bring the customer's request with you, so you start from what they already told you instead of from scratch.

2. Room by room

Walk the whole home, including the cellar, attic, garage and balconies that customers often forget.

  • Large furniture and whether it must be dismantled
  • Estimated number of boxes per room
  • Appliances and what must be disconnected
  • What stays behind and what goes to the tip
  • Fragile or valuable items

3. Access and parking

Access decides crew size and time more than volume does.

  • Floor, lift and its size
  • Narrow stairs, doors and corridors
  • Walking distance from where the truck can stand
  • Is a ladder lift or a parking permit needed?
  • The same questions for the delivery address

4. Photos, notes and a recap with the customer

Photograph large furniture, difficult access and special items. Write notes straight away, not at the end of the day. Before you leave, recap with the customer what is included: it is the easiest way to avoid arguments later.

5. From survey to quote

A survey is only useful if the information reaches whoever writes the quote and whoever plans the crew. Photos on one phone and notes in a notebook get lost.

In MovesFlow you schedule surveys, assign a person, record photos and notes and follow the status of every visit. The quote starts from that data, and the crew finds it again in the job on moving day.
